The schools are generally set up by the government and part of the costs are covered (teachers' salaries, catering for pupils). The selection of teachers and the maintenance and quality of teaching are the responsibility of the vicariate. The bishop attaches great importance to ethno-centred educational work and would also like to enable school leavers from Inírida who would like to become teachers to train at the "Uniminuto" university on a scholarship. The average number of pupils per school is 200 and rising. The schools are also used as meeting rooms for the community.
Five solar power systems, each with 4.15 kWp, have been installed and they supply the school buildings with reliable and uninterrupted electricity. The diesel generator, which is currently primarily used to supply electricity, only needs to be started if the solar power systems fail. The CO2 emissions caused by operating the diesel generator can be reduced by up to 80 %. The installation of the solar power systems provides a reliable and environmentally friendly energy supply. Noise pollution for people and animals is also largely avoided.
Sensitisation of the pupils and teachers of the locations concerned is already taking place. Topics like "Protection of the natural habitat and its significance for the global climate", "Conservation of natural resources" and "Advantages and disadvantages of using modern technology" have already been included in the curricula of all local schools in the vicariate
The installation of solar power systems provides a reliable and environmentally friendly energy supply. Computers can be used to support the teaching content. The schools' budgets are relieved because the costly use of petrol generators can be reduced to a minimum. Acoustic pollution of people and animals caused by hours of deafening noise from the generators can be permanently avoided.
In addition to the mentioned benefits, local technicians from the selected facilities have been trained by a local specialist company on issues related to the basic operation and maintenance of the solar power systems.
